Springer made 10 year old graduate mathematics books free for download!

Check out the following link:

http://link.springer.com/search/page/1?facet-series="136"&facet-content-type="Book"&showAll=false

What it will show you is a list of graduate mathematics books by the big Springer publisher. The funny thing is that all of them are now available as free pdf downloads! This is huge! Springer is known to be a prestigious publisher, but it has not been known to be very progressive or revolutionary. That is has done this step comes a bit as a surprise to me. Graduate textbooks are usually quite expensive. Although the prices of books by Springer are still on the moderate end (mostly), books can be a significant cost factor for graduate students.

I couldn’t find more information about why and when Springer has done this. It may also be a temporary measure, or some kind of weird slip-up. Releasing thousands of dollars of value for free is quite unusual. Especially for big publishers.

Anyway, since those are graduate textbooks, they are very difficult to read – especially for those without previous academic mathematical training. Also note that doing the exercises in graduate textbooks is quite necessary in order to really understand them.

Edit: Others seemed to have noticed this, too: http://www.logicmatters.net/2015/12/28/springer-make-many-logic-books-freely-downloadable/

I think this is a great move and I hope it will set a trend for publishers.

We need to feed all this to an AI, or better yet have it as a ‘library’ that any AI can use.

I chose to start with Tensor Geometry. It might go with TensorFlow, but the books on linear and algebra and matrices are probably more applicable. This is sufficiently above my head that I will be pleasantly lost as I flip through it. The book on probability also sounds good. I will download these an put them on my phone to study in times between computer sessions.

+1 to preparation for mathamagistics?

Muahaha, that’s a hell of a book. Going from real vector spaces to General Relativity within 400 pages

The title of this book is misleading. Any possible title would mislead somebody. ''Tensor Analysis" suggests to a mathematician an ungeometric, manipulative debauch of indices, with tensors ill-defined as “quantities that transform according to” unspeakable formulae. “Differential Geometry” would leave many a physicist unaware that the book is about matters with which he is very much concerned. We hope that “Tensor Geometry” will at least lure both groups to look more closely.

So, it seems to be aimed at mathematicians and physicians who want to learn how to understand General Relativity in a nice way.

I doubt it has anything to do with TensorFlow.

The first two books I downloaded were the complete books.
Others seem to be only a few pages.

Thanks for the heads up about Tensor Geometry. I will get what I can out of it. Sometimes the best value is to realize there are things I know nothing about. It expands my horizons and provides an outlying data point to build around.

The action to make some books free was apparently only a temporary “Christmas gift”. Now you have to pay again for math books! :frowning: I’ve downloaded about two dozen books that looked interesting. Too bad that this hasn’t been a permanent shift, but everything big starts small. The age of digital abundance will come, but not so fast, and not all at once.

Could we legally share these ‘once free’ books?
There is an ‘open textbook’ effort to make school books free.
The end is nigh for greedy publishers.

I started Tensor Geometry and was reminded why I never went far in math. It is just so boring!
There has to be a better way.

That is a really good question. I guess not, since the copyright still belongs to the publisher. If the publisher decides to temporarily give books away for free, that doesn’t really change the copyright situation.

Mathematics has developed a culture of anti-didactics. There are better ways to teach it, but those are much more difficult than copying what has been done before. And there doesn’t seem to be any big incentive to improve the didactics of mathematics. I mean, the world would break down, if everyone could understand higher mathematics :joy:

Interesting links! These remind me of the project

I reached out to the folks at Springer and asked them whether the availability of 57,000 titles for free download had been some kind of accident. Here’s the response I got:

Thank you for reaching out to us. From time to time our titles may become available to the public for legal download. There is no guarantee that titles available will remain available permanently. The only titles that will remain available are titles marked as Open Access.

Thus, it sounds like what happened was an accident or publicity stunt. I expect access to remain cut off.

Of course, since they murdered Aaron Swartz for this kind of ‘digital abundance’ crazyness,

anyone that did d/l them all is gonna be very paranoid about passing them around. I suppose it will all be done ‘underground’. Do we have any contacts with anonymous hacktivists / pirates, or whatever? I guess they will end up as torrents eventually. But according to Kanzure. torrents are not ‘safe’. shrug
