Fascinating. But they are doing it wrong! There shouldn’t human pilots be in those mechs. Get some real Gatling guns, rocket launchers and giant chainsaws and let them fight in the desert. Let humans control them from a safe distance of make those robots completely AI driven (with kill-switches for safety, of course).
Yeah, remote control would allow more carnage and AI driven mechs fighting to the death would be pretty interesting to see as well, but it must be fun to be inside one of those things during an epic battle, just like in films and animes! Maybe we can have the two modalities once giant robot fighting becomes more common.
We could also combine both approaches in different ways. For example, you create a fake mech cockpit and use virtual reality technology to make it feel to you as if you were directly inside of the mech and pilot it from the inside. In fact, you wouldn’t even need to pilot a real mech. Video game versions might be just as much fun, or even more so, than moving real world giants through an arena.
Nevertheless, giant robot battles are a testament to the level of technology that we’ve achieved so far. We are truly living in interesting times!
