What’s a basic income? Here’s an article from last year that is a pretty decent introduction to the concept:

It mentions the negative income tax as version of the basic income alongside the universal basic income (UBI), which I think is the actually real thing.
The article also mentions that businesses should be taxed in order to finance the basic income. This makes a lot of sense, since businesses will still exist in the future, even if most jobs will have been automated. Trying to make a basic income work on income taxes is very short sighted. Other financing schemes exist, like increasing value added tax dramatically, or even using land value taxation, but they are not discussed in the Huffington Post article.
